Just another hot summer in Texas; the temperatures are soaring while three
college students design a game of chance, skill, and death. People are dying in
Houston. This is not entirely uncommon in a big city. These people are found with
a chess piece near their bodies to mark their position in the game. Spoiled, bored,
these young men think nothing of the deaths and continue to challenge
opponents to a game with gruesome consequences. Molly Malone begins a new
job after the recent demise of her third marriage. She has started a new life with
new friends, who include a tenacious district attorney, Rachael Steuart, and her
brother Will, a private investigator and Molly’s new boss. Will’s agency is asked to
work on the Chessmen case. Molly’s last concern would be that the chessmen
would come after her or her friends and family. But they do.
